South Africa’s Sunday Times has published a series of “explosive e-mails” which reveal how much President Jacob Zuma’s “close friends the Guptas run South Africa”.

On the eve of publishing the emails (on Sunday), the newspaper claimed they would reveal major state capture by the Gupta family (brothers Atul, Tony and Ajay). The emails allegedly show the Guptas have control over cabinet ministers and companies owned by the state… and their CEOs and boards.

The Sunday Times said it would also reveal the role that Zuma’s son – and Gupta associate – Duduzane has played in issues involving the government and the Presidency.

The emails reveal, allegedly, that Zuma and his family were involved in a scheme with the Guptas to acquire residency and resettle in Dubai (but Zuma denies these claims, saying Nkandla is his only home).

Sahara CEO Ashu Chawla is also exposed as a key player in the alleged state capture.

Some revelations in the emails include that the Guptas were sent Mosebenzi Zwane’s CV which they screened before he was appointed Minister of Mineral Resources; were supplied with confidential cabinet meeting information by Communications Minister Faith Muthambi, and paid for Des van Rooyen‘s trip to Dubai after his December 2015 cabinet appointment.

UPDATE SUNDAY 28 May 2017: The Gupta Family has denied the authenticity of the emails. Their attorney Gert van der Merwe,said: “Their instruction to me was that what you read in newspapers is not the truth and according to them is fake news.” He invited the newsrooms to disclose the documents and their sources, and said the Guptas would only be in a position to comment once the documents are studied and verified, if justified. The family, he said, deny any wrongdoing. Van der Merwe claimed the ‘leaked’ emails are politically motivated, timed to influence the ANC’s Executive Committee which met this weekend. (And where the joke has been “News from the NEC meeting: Hello, and Dubai…”)

As with many revelations about corruption in the country, the EFF’s Julius Malema called it over a year ago. In a tweet in early April 2016, Malema said: “We received unconfirmed reports that Zuma wants to leave the country and seek asylum in Dubai because he doesn’t feel safe in his country!”
