The public across various provinces in South Africa are still digesting the escalating price of petrol.
On Tuesday night many fuel stations were packed with motorists filling up their tanks before the increase… and others took to social media to joke that gifts of petrol will now be welcomed for birthdays and engagements, and that SA’s current trend of cash heists is about to change to petrol heists.
The South African petrol price has risen on Wednesday by 82c a litre and the cost of diesel between 85 and 87c.
Minister of Energy, Jeff Radebe announced on Friday that the petrol hike is the result of a depreciation in the rand against the dollar, and the rise in the price of crude oil.
The petrol price hits new records where motorists have to now cough up R15.20 for a litre and R15.79 for a litre of 95 octane, unleaded petrol respectively.
The wholesale price of illuminating paraffin has increased by 82c a litre while the retail price of LPG rises by 138c per kilogram.
Motorists are feeling the pain following an increase in prices just last month.
The department has urged the public to save fuel by using lift clubs and public transport where possible.
Motorists have not taken the price hike well. Many took to social media to express their frustrations, particularly since neighbouring lands like Lesotho – which gets its petrol from South Africa – is selling it at a lower price.
One facebook user, Alex Law said: “Jerrr….We changed the President… But Still Bad to Woes.. What Else Do We need to Change…??.. We Will Be Forced To Change The Ruling Party if NOT Our Self…???”

This is a picture of a petrol pump in Lesotho, taken in May 2018. Now if Lesotho gets its petrol from South Africa, why the hell are we going to pay R5.80 more for the same petrol? #PetrolPriceHike pic.twitter.com/DN5Lr9ctx0
