Mat Cuthbert – DA Shadow Deputy Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, said in a statement on Thursday:
“Despite her initial “dismay” at the revelation that she had unduly benefitted from lotteries funding meant for culturally sensitive medical intervention projects, the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has stated that she and her legal team have chosen not to oppose the preservation order.
“The proceedings instituted by the SIU are an ongoing process to recover ill-gotten gains and the DA is strongly in support of this.”
The Tsotsi and Bold and the Beautiful star’s home was apparently built using R3-million of lottery grant money meant for an “initiation programme”. Pheto issued a statement in November 2022 denying that she had benefited from Lottery funds. “I deny any involvement in the alleged scheme,” she said, promising to co-operate fully. The money for her home allegedly came from a R20.2-million grant given by the NLC to a dodgy non-profit organisation, Zibsimode.
Today the DA said it still calls on the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) to prosecute Miss Pheto and others who have been implicated in stealing from the poor.
