A South African tourist, believed to have been a 36-year-old woman, has reportedly died this morning in a hot air balloon crash near the ancient city of Luxor in Egypt. Her name has not yet been released.
Seven other people were injured in the accident, and 12 remained unharmed, according to reports around the world.
The group of foreign tourists had apparently taken off before dawn on a sightseeing trip near Luxor, when strong winds allegedly caused the pilot to lose control and the balloon to veer off course, resulting in a crash landing.
Egypt Independent newspaper reported that the country’s meteorological service had warned of strong winds on Friday morning. Other balloons were able to land safely.
Egyptian health officials are quoted in several UK newspapers as saying the tourist who died was a 36-year-old woman, and that she was a South African national. The Egyptian Independent claimed she was a US national, which, if true, could mean she was a South African expat.
