Following public outrage over the murder of Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) student Zolile Khumalo,  the South African Minister in the Presidency for Women and Children, Bathabile Dlamini said that there are many women who are being abused by their boyfriends, and urged them to speak up.

Dlamini was addressing a large crowd of young people outside the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Thursday afternoon after the accused, Thabani Mzolo (23), appeared in court.

Mzolo allegedly shot and killed his ex-girlfriend Khumalo (21) last Tuesday, 1 May 2018, at her off-campus residence in KwaZulu-Natal, because he could not deal with the separation between the two.

The Minister said that students must speak out on abuse. She also urged the Student Representative Council (SRC) to be exemplary.

“The death of Zolile is the death of many other young women, of many other girl children. The abuse of women is linked to patriarchy and human rights, it happens to all women.

“Let us put our political jackets aside and fight violence against women, there must be a single platform of action,” said Dlamini.

The minister said more needs to be done about the perpetrators.

Meanwhile the students at MUT held a memorial service for the fallen student on Thursday. Khumalo’s family also attended the ceremony.

Representing the family, her father Comfort Khumalo said he was heartsore that Zolile had died so tragically, and  that he hopes the law can take its place so as to deter others from doing this to women.

“I wish that my daughter is the last woman in South Africa [to be killed] at the hands of a man.”

Khumalo will be buried in Eshowe on Saturday.

The case has triggered many comments on social media about femicide in South Africa.
