Several South Africans thought their wish had come true on Tuesday when a ‘news’ website published an article titled “Breaking News: South African Jacob Zuma steps down”.
But it’s a hoax and not true.
The site claimed that Zuma had announced his resignation on Tuesday morning in a 10-minute emotionally-charged speech broadcast on television; and that newly elected ANC leader – and current Deputy President of South Africa – Cyril Ramaphosa, would be sworn in as SA’s new president tomorrow, Wednesday 10 January 2018.
It said that Zuma’s family had encouraged him to step down, and that he ended his address with a prayer.
Unfortunately the fake news is going viral quickly because it appears to be on a trusted site – All Africa. However the domain name is not allafrica.com (it is slightly different) and the logo is not All Africa’s.
It is simply ‘click bait’, published to lure wishful South Africans to their website, where they hope people will click on the advertised articles beneath the story which earns them money.
