As if ‘lion farming’ wasn’t bad enough, Captured in Africa (CIA) Foundation has revealed that there is allegedly an active lion processing plant in South Africa… where lions are killed in order to obtain their bones for export.
The demand for lion bones from the Asian market has increased over the past few years as it has become a replacement for tiger bones in tiger bone wine and tiger ‘cake’, used in the Traditional Chinese Medicine market.
On Thursday, Blood Lions broke the news that 19 lions were allegedly shot the previous week in South Africa, and that another 80 could soon be killed in the Free State… for the lion bone trade.
Later that night, the CIA Foundation said that its directors – CEO Drew Abrahamson and Carl Thornton – received “a very disturbing call”.
“We got a call from someone [on Thursday night] regarding a Lion processing plant. A whole lot of info received and waiting for more!” said Abrahamson.
According to their sources, over 54 lions were killed this past week – 28 were shot and boiled on Tuesday, and another 26 on Wednesday.
“This is all for the bone trade to Asia. THIS is what the DEA & CITES has done,” said Abrahamson. “This in turn is going to drive wild Lions to be poached!!!”
In September 2016, the CITES Committee disappointed wildlife conservationists when it announced it had approved the ongoing trade in lion bone, setting ‘quotas’ for the selling of bones of captive lions (of which there are approximately 8,000 in South Africa).
Whilst the CITES committee decided to allow a lion bone quota from farmed lions in South Africa, it banned tiger farming in China.
In an update on Saturday 28 April 2018, Abrahamson said: “We are in the process of moving forward with this and have various authorities on board.
“We can confirm that it is an actual processing plant and not just a hunting farm!
“For obvious reasons we don’t want to divulge too much info at this point but trust me there is no backing down!!! Through the Foundation and other orgs we will win this thing!!!”
CIA Foundation said: “This needs to be stopped as a matter of urgency as there is clearly no regard for the welfare of Africa’s Apex predator. Shocking turns of events!!!”
