KWAZULU-NATAL – The South African Police Service (SAPS) says that contrary to rumours, baby Siwaphiwe Mbambo is still MISSING. A newborn baby that was tragically found abandoned, is NOT Siwaphiwe.
SAPS said a reward of up to R250,000 is being offered to anyone who can provide useful information that can lead to the recovery of the missing baby, and the arrest and conviction of the suspects.
The one-month-old baby was abducted yesterday after her mother’s car was hijacked by armed robbers at an intersection in Durban, near Game City at about 11h45. The mother and her eight-year-old son were forced at gunpoint out of the car, before the robbers fled with the vehicle and baby still inside it.
The car was later discovered abandoned in Montclair. Baby Siwaphiwe and her baby seat were no longer in the car.
After false reports that an abandoned newborn found today was Siwaphiwe, SAPS said that while they appreciate the interest and support by community members in helping find the missing child, “we ask that everyone please follow official information regarding this matter and ignore fake news, especially rumours that the search has been called off.*
“We are committed to finding the baby and the night shift will carry on the search.”
More than 100 police officers assisted by community members and other role players have been deployed to search for the baby.
Anyone with information is urged to contact their nearest police station or call 10111. Crime Stop can also be contacted on 08600 10111.
