GAUTENG: South African Police Services (SAPS) are today mourning yet another murder of one of their own. A 35-year old policeman, Sergeant Peter Modiegi Mogotlane, was shot and killed at Winterveld Mohlambe Stand, Mabopane, north of Pretoria at around 20:00 last night.
According to statistics released by SAPS in June this year, a police officer is murdered every four days in South Africa. During the first five months, over 700 cops had been attacked of which the majority – 81% – were on duty.
Today SAPS said Sergeant Mogotlane had been on his way home from work last night, and went to the spaza shop where he was attacked by two unknown men. They grabbed him from behind and took his service pistol.
He was shot eight times and was certified dead on the scene.
Sgt Mogotlane was stationed at Brantarion PSS and was on foot during the attack. SAPS said the assailants took his firearm and a school bag containing his wallet with appointment certificate.
A case of murder has been opened at Loate SAPS for further investigation. #FinalSalute
SAPS posted the statement together with a photo saying #StopKillingOurPolice.
South Africa’s police offers have been very visible this festive season, interacting at several events with the public, as part of the #SaferFestiveSeason campaign on South African roads (over 5,000 vehicles suspended) and beaches (see photos below).
