Popular radio and TV personality Darren Scott and his wife, former Mrs South Africa Sarah-Kate Scott, have announced their separation in a joint statement.
In the statement, published by each of them on their Facebook pages today, they revealed that “after much soul-searching and discussion” they’ve taken a mutual decision to separate.
The couple stressed that the wellbeing of their two sons is their only focus, and said that they remain “respectful” to each other, and ask that others treat their family with the same respect.
The full statement read:
“Our family has always accepted the notion that if you choose to operate in the public eye, you have to take the plaudits and good publicity, with the criticism and bad publicity.
“We are not on the side of those celebs who cry “privacy” when an awkward story rears it’s head, after accepting the media into our inner circle and benefitting from the feel-good stories.
“We’ve also always been an open book with you our friends, supporters and followers.
With this in mind, we feel it is appropriate to share what is ultimately sad news for both of us.
“After 12 years together, and almost 6 years of marriage, nearly 5 of which have been characterized by various challenges to both our marriage and our family, and after much soul-searching and discussion, we have taken a mutual decision to separate.
“This decision has been reached with the most important factor in mind, and one [in] which we both have absolute agreement: our 2 boys. They are all that matter in this.
“We are well aware that Mark and Matthew are at ages where the presence of both their parents is crucial and with this in mind, we will remain part of each other’s lives as we continue to co-parent. We both brought 2 beautiful, amazing boys into this world and that is our only focus.
“We remain firmly respectful of each other, and we ask that everyone else do the same with regards to our family.
“Please understand this is – and has been – an extremely difficult time for our family, for various reasons, and we ask you to be considerate of the fact that we just wish to protect our children and give them as normal and happy an upbringing as they deserve, and as we were afforded.
“We have come to this decision together, and as mature adults will move forward in a mature manner, both remaining firmly committed to, and acting in the best interests of our children.”
Although many people responded sadness, most wished each the best going forward and echoed the words of Dale Johnstone who wrote:
“Although it be with tears in my eyes that I read this sad news, I would still like to salute both Sarah Kate and yourself for the way in which you both opted to handle this situation for the sake of your whole family. Yes, some will criticise and throw stones, but ultimately this is your life, not their’s. I will keep your whole family in my prayers as you face this and many other challenges. God bless.”
Darren Scott is currently recovering in hospital in Johannesburg from an operation three weeks ago to remove melanoma cancer from his lungs.
