The Cape of Good Hope SPCA has reported that the dog in the video – showing a police car running it over and then driving away – has sadly been put down.
The Elsies River family of the brakkie, named Kosie, are reportedly devastated.
The SPCA said: “We have understandably received many enquiries with regards to this incident and we are equally enraged at this blatant act of animal cruelty at the very hands of those who serve to enforce the law.
“The injured dog in the video was taken to the Animal Anti-Cruelty League (AACL) in Epping by a member of the public.”
A vet at the AACL (which is not affiliated with the SPCA) examined the dog, and a decision was made to put the dog to sleep based on the severity of the injuries.
Neighbours told The Voice that they were woken by the “distressed yelping” of the dog at around 1am on Thursday morning. Their security camera had caught the incident on film.
The neighbour said the police van appeared to have “deliberately driven over him”.
Another dog – named Blade – can be seen after the incident distressed and unsure what to do.
According to The Voice, Kosie was a ‘pavement special’, adopted by Maude Alcastor for her pensioner parents after they fed him over a year ago, and he never left. “My father loved him,” said Maude.
Police spokesperson, Captain FC van Wyk, says the family may approach Elsies River police to lay a charge.
The SPCA said it has offered to assist the AACL (who have the vet’s report and dog’s remains) with the compilation of evidence; and “hope that we can contribute positively to this case”.
