The alleged South African boyfriend of 80’s popstar and Aids activist Annie Lennox has quietly divorced his wife. Court documents that were secretly filed in Florida have come to light, showing that gynaecologist Dr Mitch Besser and his former wife Debra Jackson were granted a divorce in December 2011 (scroll down to view document).
Dr Besser met Scottish star Annie Lennox when she visited the couple and their two children as they took care of children with HIV in South Africa, with the charity he co-founded mothers2mothers.
According to media reports, Jackson was distraught after Lennox and Dr Besser became close, but friends of the couple insisted that they had already separated before Lennox came on the scene.
Although Dr Besser and Jackson are South African, they filed for divorce in West Palm Beach, Florida (USA), where they own a home.
The papers cite the marriage as being “irretrievably broken”.
mothers2mothers, which helps to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV, is an NGO (non-governmental organisation) which was started in 2001 when Dr Besser opened the first site in Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town. It has now grown to over 500 sites in seven countries, and has received contributions from international stars such as David Beckham and Elton John.
57-year-old Dr Besser received a Presidential Citizen’s Medal from then President George Bush in 2008.
