Popular South African actor Menzi Ngubane has sadly passed away at the age of 56. No official statement appears to have been released yet, but his passing has been confirmed by Mzansi Magic.
Mzansi Magic tweeted: “Today we join the nation in mourning the loss of a true titan of the industry. An unforgettable and enigmatic talent who left his mark on this world and our hearts! #RIPMenziNgubane. You will be sorely missed. Our sincere condolences to his loved ones.”
Menzi has long suffered kidney problems. After experiencing kidney failure a decade ago, he was put on dialysis in 2010 for five years. In 2015 he received a kidney transplant thanks to a kind SA donor. In May last year (2020), fans of the award-winning actor prayed for his speedy recovery after reports that he was “battling for his life” at Charlotte Maxeke Hospital in Johannesburg. A #PrayForMenziNgubane hashtag went viral at the time.
The actor – who starred in The Queen on Showmax – was also known to many South Africans for his previous roles as Judas Ngwenya on Isibaya, and as Sibusiso Dlomo on SABC 1’s soapie Generations. He also appeared in, amongst others, Heist, Gold Diggers, Kwakhala Nyonini and Yizo Yizo… and acted with Hollywood star Samuel L. Jackson in 2004 film ‘In My Country’ (about the SA Truth and Reconciliation Commission).
Shocked South Africans have today taken to social media to express their sadness at Menzi’s passing.
One said: “That man practically raised a lot of us. We watched him showcase his talent every night before going to bed. This is a true loss. #RIPMenziNgubane.”
Former Public Protector, Prof Thuli Madonsela, said: “More heartbreaking news four our nation as we learn that actor Menzi Ngubane is no more and the same about Noxolo Maqashalala*. Heartfelt condolences to their families, friends, colleagues and loved ones.”
Actor Thapelo Mokoena tweeted: “KZN has a treasure in you. I respect everything you’ve done for our people. Rest in Peace Big Man.”
Exactly a week ago, on 6 March 2021, Menzi posted one of his final tweets. It simply said #Saturday, and featured this photo:

One fan responded to the picture telling Menzi how disappointed he had been when Menzi refused to take a photo with him when they met years previously at Century City in Cape Town. Today that fan posted Menzi’s reply. The actor had responded: “Please heal. I’m also human and I have my “off” days. God bless.”
