The road ahead looks emptier with the announcements today that over 5,000 vehicles have been suspended and over 2,000 impounded during December; and that the first in a series of fuel price hikes is expected in early January 2017.
The Automobile Association (AA) said in a press release Thursday that unaudited month-end fuel price data – released by the Central Energy Fund (CEF) – showed substantial price increases for all types of fuel.
Petrol is expected to jump in South Africa by 51 cents a litre, diesel by around 40 cents and illuminating paraffin by 43 cents
“The Rand has weakened against the US dollar since mid-December, while international petroleum prices have continued their upward march,” the Association said.
The AA said, despite the Rand weakening, had the international prices not risen since November, the SA prices were due to drop by two cents.
2017 is expected to be a difficult year for motorists, said the AA.
The SA Police Services (SAPS) also announced today that since the start of the festive season (1 December), 5,349 vehicles have been suspended, while another 2,133 were impounded.
The vehicles in question were found to be unroadworthy and may not be operated on public roads until all the identified defects have been fixed.
