Many South Africans have been surprised, even outraged, by the ‘raw egg challenge’ that has swept South Africa during lockdown – but the latest twist it has taken has shocked and “disgusted” authorities and animal lovers nationwide. Three South African men have been filmed consuming live animals.
The Raw Egg Challenge – brought on by those bored by the COVID-19 restrictions to stay home – involves social media users being nominated by friends to video themselves downing a raw egg, spoon of sugar and shot of brandy, rum, tequila, gym or whiskey. A tame baboon was even filmed completing the challenge. (See below.)
But while some jumped at the challenge, others shirked away from the raw egg… and comedian Schalk Bezuidenhout – who has been hilariously entertaining South Africans on Facebook with his daily lockdown videos – spoke out about it just yesterday (encouraging people to stop with the challenges and rather use those eggs to make banana bread… with a smell that ‘hugs you’). Watch below.
But there was no laughing on Wednesday as the NSPCA posted a photo of three people consuming live animals. The National Council of SPCAs said: “We are horrified that we have to post this.
“In the last 24 hours, the NSPCA has received video footage of three South Africans that have consumed live animals as part of an extension of the Raw Egg challenge.
“We are disgusted that live animals have become the centre of barbaric entertainment at a time where compassion is so desperately needed…”
The NSPCA urged South Africa to act responsibly, protect the vulnerable, and “most of all, to be kind – no matter the creature.
“We remind the public that cruelty to animals is a criminal offence. All animals are protected by the Animals Protection Act, this includes fish and frogs,” said the NSPCA.
