South African Minister of Police, Fikile Mbalula, warned on Wednesday that hijacking criminals are targeting Range Rover cars.
In a message on Twitter, Mbalula said: “Alert: Criminals are on a hunt for Range Rover cars. if you drive a range rover car, you are in danger of being hijacked. STAY ALERT…”
In February it was revealed that Polos were then the most sought after car by criminals. A teenager who was arrested trying to steal a car in Durban admitted to police that he was paid a different amount for each car, and could get over R5,000 per Polo.
According to Mbalula, Range Rovers are being sold to a buyer in southern Africa for approximately R150,000. It’s claimed by several commenters on Twitter that there are syndicates involved and the cars are being distributed to other countries in southern Africa.
The minister claimed that the police department is closing in on the main buyer and “will arrest him” shortly.
One user on Twitter responded to Mbalula’s tweet, agreeing that just last night a Range Rover driver was hijacked and killed. Well known radio personality Redi Tlhabi also confirmed she knew of six Range Rover owners who had been hijacked over the last couple of months.
