Playboy magazine announced in a tweet on Wednesday (USA time) that “American Icon and Playboy Founder, Hugh M. Hefner passed away today. He was 91. #RIPHef.”
On the Playboy website they have today replaced their site with a large photo of Hefner, carrying his quote: “Life is too short to be living somebody else’s dream.”
Playboy Enterprises revealed that he passed away peacefully at home from natural causes.
Hef, as he liked to be called, became world famous as the founder of Playboy magazine – a magazine he started publishing in his kitchen in 1953… which went on to become the highest selling men’s magazine in the world, selling over 7 million copies per month at one time and featuring beautiful women, including celebrities on the cover – from Hollywood star Marilyn Monroe to South African actress Charlize Theron.
He was also famous for his hedonistic lifestyle as ‘Mr Playboy’, the “embodiment of the magazine itself” as he described himself… wandering around his mansion in his silk pyjamas, throwing lavish parties with beautiful semi-clothed women and sleeping with many of them. He claimed he had bedded over 1,000 women and said he was grateful to Viagra. Hefner said in a 2013 interview with Esquire that “when I was married I never cheated”. However, he admitted, “I made up for it when I wasn’t married”.
The heartbreak that changed Hugh to Hef…
His life may not have turned out this way had his heart not been broken by a girl named Betty Conklin when he was just 16 in 1942. Watch below as he recalls in a 2014 video how the heartbreak changed him forever… transforming him from Hugh to Hef as he reinvented himself in a determination to never have his heart broken like that again.
He said over the years he became a husband, activist, father, philosopher and that he “never stopped evolving”. He said through it all women remained his muse.
Hefner is survived by wife Chrystal Harris (whom he married in 2012), and four children from previous relationships.
One of his sons, Cooper said today that Hef will be “greatly missed by many” and paid tribute to his dad’s “exceptional and impactful life as a media and cultural pioneer”. He said his father had been a strong advocate for free speech, civil rights and sexual freedom.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter six years ago, Hefner said: “In my wildest dreams, I could not have imagined a sweeter life…”
