NSRI confirms fatal drowning near Port Edward

The NSRI has confirmed a tragic drowning of a 25-year-old man at Glenmore Lagoon on the Tongazi River near Port Edward.

On Sunday afternoon, NSRI Port Edward duty crew were activated following reports of a missing man at Glenmore Lagoon on the Tongazi River near Port Edward.

Lower South Coast Link lifeguards had initiated a search and raised the alarm when it is believed the man, age 25, from the Eastern Cape, disappeared under water while swimming.

A NSRI rescue vehicle and NSRI members private vehicles responded along with NSRI rescue swimmers.

The SA Police Services, Police Search and Rescue and Police K9 Search and Rescue responded and joined lifeguards and NSRI in the search operation.

POLICE HAVE OPENED AN INQUEST DOCKET

Police divers, both free diving and scuba diving, were deployed into the water.

During the search, police divers located and recovered the body of the man from under the water.

Tragically, the man was declared deceased.

The body of the man was taken into the care of police and Government Health Forensic Pathology Services.

Police have opened an inquest docket.
