Unsuspecting foreign tourists to the Kruger National Park in South Africa were a little surprised when an angry hippo decided to attack their car! Giggling a little hysterically, they were lucky enough to get away from the hippo which could have wreaked serious damage on their car and opened it like “a can of beans”.
The video by YouTube user ‘Kruger National Park’ who said: “In times of drought, Hippos can become quite stressed and as a result become more aggressive.”
They said when food is scarce, hippos leave the relative safety of the water to feed far away… where they are likely to attack anything standing in their way between themselves and their safe haven, be it a river or a dam.
Noting that hippos are rarely seen this close up outside of water, the user said the “hippo quickly became agitated” with the two tourists “as they positioned themselves for a better photograph”.
Hippos are “remarkably fast and with powerful jaws can easily open up a car’s protective metal ‘like a can of beans’.”
Apart from some nervous and hysterical laughing… the tourists remained calm under this “extraordinary circumstance” and got the sighting of a lifetime, said Kruger.
