A 36-year-old man in Bloemfontein in the Free State, South Africa, has been arrested for being in possession of valuable goods including Kruger Rands and antique watches. The suspect was arrested by the Parkweg Tracing Intervention Unit.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) said their team received intelligence-driven information about the suspect being in possession of Kruger Rands on Friday morning, 15 October, at about 05h20.
“They reacted on the information and arrested 36-year-old male with a plastic bag after he was found in a meter taxi in Parkweg near the Municipal swimming pool,” said SAPS.
“In the plastic bag and in his pockets of the trouser, members found Antique watches dating back in the 1800 period, binoculars used by the Anglo boer War soldiers, Antique knives, medals and coins,” said SAPS.
While it is not illegal to possess valuable goods (something many social media users have commented on SAPS’ post), the man was arrested because he “could not give police a clear explanation of where he found the valuable Antiques”.
The suspect will appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s court for possession of suspected stolen goods.
