A teenager tragically drowned yesterday at Llandudno Beach, in the Cape Peninsula of South Africa, after apparently slipping off some rocks and being swept away by rip-currents. The 15-year-old female’s body was recovered yesterday about 1km off shore, and surrounded by dolphins.
The SABC reported NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon as saying:
“An NSRI rescue craft, patrolling about a kilometre offshore, reported that the body of the teenager was located floating on the water surface accompanied by a pod of dolphins near to the rescue craft.”
Police divers recovered her body, and brought to the teen back to the NSRI Hout Bay station aboard an NSRI rescue craft.
Many South Africans offering their condolences, shared how touching it was that the dolphins stayed near to her. “So beautiful she was guided to her rescuers by the angels of the sea,” said one. “How beautiful that she was with a pod of dolphins, almost as if they were protecting her. Rest in peace little Angel,” added another. “So beautiful and sad at the same time that she was guarded by those dolphins,” wrote someone else.
But for her family and friends, there will be little consolation. They have tragically lost their 15-year-old daughter who had her whole life ahead of her.
The teenager was first reported missing on Saturday evening at 18h05. According to the NSRI, it appears she had been with a group of friends when she may have slipped off rocks.
A massive search and rescue mission was launched including NSRI swimmers and sea rescue crafts, City of Cape Town’s lifeguards, Police Dive Unit divers, Community Medics and many more.
The search continued on Saturday until the pod of dolphin were noticed, and her body was retrieved.
In early July former Springbok Breyton Paulse lost his mom and aunt in a similar incident when they drowned after being washed off the Old Harbour wall by waves in Hermanus. They were allegedly posing for a photo at the time.
