Legendary boxing trainer and manager Nick Durandt has been killed in a bike accident near Clarens in the Free State. He was 53.
According to reports, Durandt collided with a vehicle on the road between Bethlehem and Clarens late Friday afternoon.
Durandt, who was the president of the Crusaders Bike Club, retired from boxing last year after almost 30 years of producing more champion boxers than any other trainer in South Africa’s boxing history.
Durandt moved to SA as a child from the UK, with his father who had been a professional footballer.
During his career, Durandt produced about 30 world champions, 27 international champions and 95 South African champions, according to an article on Sports24 last year. No other trainer came close.
His fighters included Thulani “Sugarboy” Malinga, Phillip Ndou (who won SA champ and World champ three times each), Cassius Baloyi and others.
Durandt was also instrumental in helping train UK boxer Hasim Rahman, who went on surprise fans when he knocked out Lennox Lewis in 2001.
Tributes are pouring in on social media for the multi-award winning trainer and manager.
