The Dutch government has become the latest country to impose a flight ban on all flights to the Netherlands with passengers from South Africa, the UK and various countries in South America due to continued Covid-19 safety concerns, following more contagious variants being found in SA, England and Brazil. The ban will be effective from Saturday 23 January 2021.
The Dutch Prime Minister, Mark Rutte, also announced that the Netherlands will extend its lockdown by three weeks, as it attempts to protect its citizens from the new variants of the Coronavirus pandemic.
KLM Royal Dutch Airlines said in a statement that it has “therefore regretfully cancelled all flights from Johannesburg and Cape Town to Amsterdam in order to comply with the new regulation issued by the Dutch Government.”
The airline apologised for the inconvenience these cancellations cause their customers; and said all passengers will be contacted and re-booked on alternative flights at no additional cost.
KLM said it is committed to working within the rules and regulations imposed during the pandemic. “The health and safety of our passengers and crew remains our number one priority,” said the Dutch airline.
