The Ahmed Kathrada foundation in South Africa has replied to comments made by Economic Freedom Fighter leader, Julius Malema about Indians.
Addressing EFF youth at an event in Klerksdorp over the weekend, Malema said: “The majority of Indians hate Africans, majority of Indians are racist, and we must never be scared to say that.
“They are racist. I’m not saying all Indians, I’m saying the majority of them. The same thing applies to so some of the coloured brothers.”
Kathrada Foundation’s Nishan Bolton said on Tuesday: “That kind of generalization doesn’t help to find solutions to a problem that they are identifying. I think to say that all Indians treat Africans as sub-humans again without substantiating is a problem.
“My big problem with that statement, if you are aware of people being treated as sub-humans, what have you done? Who have you reported it to? How many cases have you opened?
“Leaders today are required not only to identify a problem in society. But to also indicate what they intend doing about it and what they think society should be doing about it.”
The South African Institute of Race Relations (IRR), Michael Morris says political leaders should know better… “because it’s clearly an effort to gain attention at the risk, say of division and resentment. And our research indicates that it is nonsense to suggest that people of Indian descent or indeed of any other racially defined group are collectively holding antagonistic or racial attitudes towards others.”
