Irish singer Sinéad O’Connor has sadly passed away at the age of 56. She was reportedly found at a London home.

The Nothing Compares 2 U singer released 10 studio albums during her career, but her biggest success came from the 1990 hit which was a massive number one around the world, and featured a video (watch below) in which genuine tears ran down her face.

Her cause of death has not yet been revealed.

Throughout her life Sinead had suffered mental health issues and addictions. She had a difficult childhood and her mother died in a car accident when she was young. In 2020 she announced she was going into rehab after six very difficult years. Last year her heart was broken again when her son Shane (17) died by suicide. She is survived by her three other children.

Just two weeks ago Sinead was starting to sound positive again, writing on Facebook: “Hi All, recently moved back to London after 23 years absence. Very happy to be home : ) Soon finishing my album. Release early next year : ) Hopefully Touring Australia and New Zealand toward end 2024. Europe, USA and other territories beginning early 2025 : )”

Her family said today in a statement:

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad. Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time.”

Irish President Michael D Higgins said: “What Ireland has lost at such a relatively young age is one of our greatest and most gifted composers, songwriters and performers of recent decades, one who had a unique talent and extraordinary connection with her audience, all of whom held such love and warmth for her.”

The BBC’s Mark Savage said: “Although she was a controversial figure, there was always a tenderness to her protests. When she ripped up a picture of the Pope on US television, she was thinking about victims of abuse, not about her image. Her later albums featured… hymns to peace and community. Earlier this year, she won a classic album award in Ireland, and dedicated it to the country’s refugee community. Nothing Compares 2 U was the outlier: a song that made her famous against her wishes. At heart, she was a protest singer with a voice that demanded to be heard. That is how we should remember her…”
