South African musician AKA has sadly been gunned down at a venue in Durban in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. According to reports and videos on social media, he was fatally wounded at a night spot in Florida Road.
Aka, whose real name was Kiernan Jarryd Forbes, had been posting clips throughout the day, and had posted his location at Wish on Florida. He was expected to be performing later in the night in Durban. It’s reported that he was shot six times outside the venue just after 10pm. A second male victim was also killed. His name has not yet been released. (UPDATE Sat 11 Feb: the second victim has been named as Tebello ‘Tibz’ Motsoane, a celebrity author and chef, as well as good friend and former manager to AKA.)
Since a KZN Police spokesperson confirmed to News24 that a “well-known rapper” has been shot dead, fans have been leaving messages on his page. “Pls I refuse to believe??, not Supa Mega?!!” said one. Another said: “????I’m literally crying how?” While another added: “What an iconic post; your final post before leaving us on earth, May heaven welcome you with opens arms, I am sorry & rest in eternal peace! ??️✨”
AKA, who had just turned 35 on 28 January, was born and raised in Cape Town. His single ‘Victory Lap’ – off his debut album Altar Ego – rocketed him to fame in 2011. In April 2021, AKA’s fiancée Anele (Nellie) Tembe tragically fell to her death from a Cape Town hotel room.
The police spokesperson told News24: “I can confirm that two men were killed and one of them is a well-known rapper. Police will not be releasing any names of the victims yet until a full investigation is completed.”
SAPeople has reached out to SAPS for a statement.
UPDATE: AKA’s parents have released a statement about their son’s untimely death.
