It’s getting harder and harder to convince foreigners that wild animals don’t roam the streets of South Africa. After lions recently escaped (again) from the Kruger National Park (which ended tragically), a video has been uploaded to YouTube which shows a hippo casually wandering through a petrol station in St Lucia, KwaZulu-Natal. UPDATE Feb 2020: It’s happened again! Watch hippo take stroll through petrol station in South Africa.
The video of the hippopotamus walking down the main street of St Lucia was filmed by Innes Minnie and uploaded by a wildlife tour operator.
The casual hippo walks through the Engen fuel station, totally unperturbed by all the people and vehicles.
Earlier this year there were reports in the Zululand Observer of a hippo in the area attacking a tourist on his way home in the evening. A passing motorist rescued him by bumping his vehicle gently into the hippo which then released the man. He spent a night in hospital with minor injuries.
Hippos are the third largest mammals (after elephants and white rhino) and considered one of Africa’s most dangerous animals. Never get between a hippo and the water!
