South Africans have been swept up in the Green Moon hoax that’s been spreading across the world over the past couple of weeks. Today locals were sharing a post, encouraging each other to look out for the moon tonight as it appears to turn green for about 90 minutes.
The ‘rare’ phenomenon is said to only occur ever 420 years.
But as exciting as it sounds, it’s not true.
The same rumour has been spread annually over the past three years. The first person to create the ‘green moon’ photo did so back in 2010 as a joke… but since 2016, the pic has been used as if it were a real event.
In America many of those sharing it spiced up their comments with references to marijuana – as today – 20 April – is the ‘official’ worldwide day of celebrating marijuana.
