Grade 1 learner dies after consuming biscuits from a local spaza

A Grade 1 learner reportedly fell sick and started vomiting after consuming biscuits allegedly bought from a local spaza shop.

A Grade 1 learner from Mandlethu Primary School in Tsakane, Brakpan, has passed away after allegedly consuming biscuits from a local spaza shop.

The incident happened on Tuesday, 6 February.

GRADE 1 LEARNER DIES AFTER CONSUMING BISCUITS

According to the Gauteng Department of Education, the learner began experiencing health complications in class just before the break at 11:00 and started vomiting a few minutes later.

The Grade 1 learner’s parents were contacted immediately to come to the school, while emergency services were also alerted to provide necessary medical assistance.

Unfortunately, the learner was certified dead by paramedics upon arrival.

Gauteng Education spokesperson Steve Mabona said according to information at their disposal, the parents confirmed that the young girl had consumed biscuits bought from a local spaza shop owned by foreign nationals.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding this incident.

EDUCATION MEC SADDENED BY YET ANOTHER LEARNER DEATH

Mabona said the department’s psycho-social support unit would be deployed on Wednesday, 7 February, to provide trauma support and counselling to all affected individuals.

Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane said this unfortunate incident deeply saddens him.

“We plead with parents to be vigilant concerning the edible goods that their children consume. We call upon law enforcement agencies and municipalities to be more stringent on compliance matters related to spaza shop products.

“Indeed, we wish to extend our sincerest condolences to the family and the school community,” he said.
