The nine-year-old girl, Sadia Sukhraj, who was tragically killed during a hijacking outside a school in Shallcross, Durban in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, yesterday, is being buried today.
Her death yesterday sparked protests in Chatsworth where residents said they are “gatvol” of the escalating crime. The protests led to 20 arrests, amidst accusations that police – firing rubber bullets – used excessive force.
The vehicle Sadia was travelling in on Monday morning, with her father, was reportedly hijacked by three heavily armed suspects as her dad was pulling out of the drive-way, to take her to school.
Her father was removed from the car and a shoot-out ensued. It’s alleged that an off-duty policeman assisted.
The suspects took off with Sadia in the car… but collided with a truck. The suspects fled, although one was allegedly beaten to death by community members who pulled him from the car, according to a witness.
Two hijacking suspects have been arrested.
Paramedics rushed Sadia to hospital as she had gunshot wounds, but she was sadly declared dead upon arrival.
This week – 27 May to 03 June – is Child Protection Week in South Africa.
