When Free State resident Marinda Gouws saw a train in Reitz for the first time in five years, she filmed the rare event from the car in which she was travelling (as a passenger)… not realising she was about to witness a near train wreck!
Watch the video below to see the incredibly close call between the unexpected train and a truck travelling from the other side, which didn’t stop.
Safety organisations have spoken out about the near fatal collision to remind drivers that even when a railroad crossing is seldom used, it’s still imperative to always stop and look first.
After uploading the video on 21 July, Marinda had no idea news organisations would pick up on it. But in the last couple of days it has started to go viral… leaving Marinda feeling slightly embarrassed by her commentary, which was intended only for her travelling companion’s ears. “My nou bloedrooi laat bloos… ek bewe soos ‘n riet!!!” she said in Afrikaans.
She also added that luckily there were no lives lost.
