Most of us want a farm in Africa… but there’s a family in Durban who appear to have made that dream come true for themselves right in the suburbs!
Although it’s not quite what it seems. The wealthy Abdoola family in South Africa are apparently storing the 100 odd sheep, plus some goats, for the religious celebration of Eid elAdha on Friday evening.
The SPCA have investigated a couple of times, and confirmed the animals were being kept in good condition. The sheep were hidden from the road by a white marquis, and the owner had not applied for a permit.
His application has since been turned down (although livestock is allowed on private property for religious purposes) and he is paying a daily fine. He has confirmed to concerned neighbours that the animals will not be slaughtered on the premises.
The story made the news in KwaZulu-Natal with the owner saying those who complained weren’t respecting his cultural rights; but they in turn said he wasn’t respecting the neighbours’ rights.
Most used the opportunity to come up with jokes that involved bleating about counting sheep, Silence of the Lambs and other “woolly” expressions.
