South African Police Services (SAPS) have intercepted goods being smuggled – in a donkey cart – from Limpopo, South Africa into Zimbabwe. A week ago a bakkie – allegedly being towed by donkeys – was also intercepted by police as the thieves crossed the Limpopo River.
The Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba, again led an aerial operation that resulted in this interception.
In a media statement, SAPS said: “A donkey cart was spotted from a police helicopter conveying goods towards the Zimbabwe side of the Limpopo River, which is about 2km from last week’s success.
“The suspects, when noticing a police helicopter landing on the river bank, fled into Zimbabwe; leaving the donkeys and the cart in the dryer portion of the Limpopo river.
SAPS said that the vehicle being smuggled last week had been reported stolen in Durban, and was abandoned by the suspects in the middle of the Limpopo River together with five donkeys that were used to pull it through the water.
The latest suspects fled after they were spotted from the police helicopter, said SAPS.
The origin of these items, which (sadly) include groceries, is still being investigated and no arrests have been made.
This monitoring by top police management in Limpopo is part of SAPS’ Safer Festive Season Operations, and will be on-going for the entire period.
