The South African owners of popular Mango Beach Lodge on the normally beautiful palm-lined shores of Tofo, Mozambique, have written of the destruction and devastation that Cyclone Dineo has left behind, as the downgraded tropical storm heads to South Africa.
In a message this morning the lodge owners said most of Mango Beach has been destroyed, the restaurant flattened, and their houses ruined.
Tofo is just 24km from one of Mozambique’s oldest cities, Inhambane, which was hit hard by Cyclone Dineo last night.
The lodge is owned by South African partners Mark and Heather Kreel, Steffan and Paula Rusche and Graham and Christine Vogét… who put hard work, heart, soul and life savings into the project.
This morning an update from one of the partners who was not at the scene (where communication is difficult), was devastating.
Thankfully though, they reported everyone seems to be alive and well.
“The storm has left a major path of destruction… Mango Beach has been destroyed for the most part. Still awaiting photos and footage to see how badly. The vegetation has been flattened and palms have been uprooted.
“The restaurant [which had overlooked the Indian Ocean] has been flattened and knee high in sand from the dune which has shifted from the wind. Our houses have been ruined. Not sure of the extent. Water tank and system was lifted and destroyed by the wind.
“Things are not sounding well at all. The surrounding lodges seem to have had the same fate but I cannot confirm the extent at this point… Pray for Mozambique.”
