South African actress Charlize Theron says she may need to leave Hollywood because of racism.
Charlize, whose two adopted children – Jackson (8) and August (2) are black – told Elle magazine for their May issue: “Racism is much more alive and well than people thought.”
The 42-year-old said that “being raised during the apartheid era in South Africa made me so hyperaware of equality and human rights”, and that the past year with Donald Trump as President has been tough.
“We can’t deny it anymore,” said Charlize. “We have to be vocal. There are places in this country where, if I got a job, I wouldn’t take it. I wouldn’t travel with my kids to some parts of America, and that’s really problematic.”
She said there are many times when she looks at her kids and realises that if this continues she may need to leave America “because the last thing I want is for my children to feel unsafe.”
Charlize told interviewer and comedian Chelsea Handler (who also happens to be a close friend) that her mom Gerda co-parents the children with her. “I would feel pretty alone if I didn’t have a partner in crime in all of this,” she said.
Charlize is currently promoting her new film, Tully, about motherhood in 2018. Watch the trailers below.
