Italian actor Bud Spencer passed away peacefully on Monday in Rome, at the age of 86, with his family around him.
His family tweeted a message saying: “With our deepest regrets, we have to tell you that Bud is flying to his next journey.” According to his son his last words were “thank you”.
The actor – whose real name was Carlo Pedersoli – was best known for his spaghetti westerns, and was nicknamed the “big friendly giant” by his fans because of his size.
He co-starred several times with Terence Hill (whose real name was Mario Girotti). Some of his films included Double Trouble, Go For It, They Call Me Trinity, Ace High, and A Friend is a Treasure.
Spencer was also a professional swimmer.
The Italian prime minister tweeted: “Ciao #BudSpencer We loved you so much.”
Spencer was popular amongst South Africans, with one SAPeople follower, Pino Villa, recalling “It was great to watch his movies at the Top Star drive-in in Johannesburg.”
