Wallabies prop Taniela Tupou is wearing bandaging on his right arm today after being robbed in Johannesburg last night, just hours after the Australian team had arrived in South Africa.

Tupou fortunately suffered only minor cuts to his arm after a thief snatched his cell phone, and he took chase. The thief jumped in a waiting car with the stolen phone, and Tupou was injured whilst attempting to grab his phone back out of the car.

ABC News in Australia reported that Tupou was “shaken” by the incident, which took place outside the team’s hotel at around 21h15 Saturday night.

The 23-year-old was returning to the Sandton Sun from dinner across the road with team-mates when the robbery happened.

The Australian Rugby website reports that Tupou said:

Last night went out for dinner with the front rowers, it was just outside the hotel and I went back, someone came from behind and took my phone.

I thought it was one of the boys so I looked back and he was wearing a hoodie and ran with my phone

I tried to chase after him, he got in the car and I got a bit of a cut but I’m fine.

The only thing is I lost my phone but I can live with that.

Wallabies officials reported the incident to the South African police, who took statements from all the Wallabies who had been present.

Tupou was treated for minor cuts to his arm, but is still fine to play next Sunday in the Australia vs Springboks Rugby Championship Test at Ellis Park.
