Ag Please Eskom – the joys of loadshedding
Here’s a Loadshedding tribute song from Nikki Horn, aka TheNixter, whose previous South African-ised Christmas carols went viral during the festive season. Based on Jeremy Taylor’s ‘Ag Pleez Deddy’.
Load Shedding Song 2015 – Hours Of Darkness
– by Shrish Viyas Hargoon, based on Simon & Garfunkel’s “Sounds of Silence”.
Shrish V Hargoon uploaded “Hours of Darkness” (see below) to YouTube with the message that “it has not been professionally recorded, so you will find flaws. #JustForFun.”
Like most South Africans Shrish has been affected by loadshedding, particularly in the evenings.
“Our slot has been mostly 8pm – 10 pm. My mom would get the candles, paraffin lamp and battery-operated LED lantern ready before 8pm so we wouldn’t stumble around in the dark. Quite hilarious at times!” he says.
“But we have now become accustomed to it, and changed our routine to match that of Load Shedding…”

Now some Serious Stuff
As rumours circulate that South Africa could be plunged into as much as 2-4 weeks of no-power, the DA insisted in a statement yesterday that this electricity crisis was ANC-made.
The rumours were ignited after comments were made by Eskom CEO Tshediso Matona, but he has since claimed they were “misinterpreted” and that the possibility of a nationwide blackout is small…although other Eskom sources have been quoted in local media as saying that a collapse of the total power grid is a “very significant possibility for the foreseeable future”.
According to reports both the South African government and the US Embassy have emergency plans in place in the event of a blackout. An article about the US Embassy in Pretoria’s “evacuation plan” has been shared like wildfire on social media, while it has also been revealed that should the grid fail, President Jacob Zuma and his cabinet would be moved to a secret location and that “soldiers would be deployed at key sites” including the central bank and SABC to maintain law and order. Several private companies have also allegedly drawn up contingency plans.
DA Parliamentary Leader Mmusi Maimane MP yesterday delivered a speech outside Chancellor House, accusing the ANC government of having made millions from doing business with Eskom, claiming the economy has lost R300-billion and 1-million jobs since load-shedding began in 2008, and concluding that “when President Zuma refuses to take responsibility for the electricity crisis and blames it on Apartheid, he should instead be telling South Africans the truth: that this is an ANC-made crisis from which the party has profited handsomely.” (Read the full speech here.)
Hours Of Darkness – The Lyrics
Welcome darkness, my good friend,
It’s good to meet you once again,
Because the power grids are stressing,
That’s the reason for this load shedding
and the switches, from that time stilled stayed on
still stayed on
during few hours of darkness.
Why they do it we all know
Coz their resources are low,
They are doing it in three stages
Feels like we living in dark ages
Then the night was lit by the flash of a bright bright light
that brought me sight
And broke few hours of darkness.
And when the light came on I saw
Ten white candles, maybe more.
Two hours have now melted away
Keep the rest for another day
coz load shedding will never fade away,
it’s here to stay
and bring few hours of darkness.
Why they do it we all know
Coz their resources are low,
They are doing it in three stages
Feels like we living in dark ages
Without warning, lights are taken away from us
Without a fuss,
Given few hours of darkness.
And the people are not sure
What to do anymore
How do we avoid this pain
Our lives are taking lots of strain
Without power, we may never function again,
Its such a shame
in just few hours of darkness

Ag Please Eskom – The Lyrics
Ag please Eskom won’t you leave our lights on we want to watch something on TV.
Morning Expresso, plus 7de Laan omnibus.
1980’s reruns on SABC
Torches,candlelight,
Cooking on a skottel braai
All this load shedding is getting old!
Internet’s not working right
Oh how much I’m gonna cry
When all the water in my geyser has got cold
Ag please Eskom won’t you leave our lights
Load shedding makes my wife look pretty
In the dark what can we do
Ag I will give you a clue
Now we are expecting a load shedding baby
Torches,candlelight,
Cooking on a skottel braai
All this load shedding is getting old!
Internet’s not working right
Oh how much I’m gonna cry
When all the water in my geyser has got cold
O Poep
