60-Year-Old Man Mauled to Death By His Own Dogs in South Africa

POTCHEFSTROOM – A 60-year-old man from Lichtenburg was allegedly mauled to death by his three dogs on Saturday afternoon, during loadshedding.

His wife – who was busy on the other side of the house at the time – had heard the dogs barking, when it’s believed the attack took place, but thought nothing of it since they often barked. The couple’s house is on a busy street so the dogs regularly barked at traffic and passersby.

When loadshedding finished and electricity was restored, the woman went back into the house to look for her husband, but couldn’t find him. She then allegedly noticed him lying motionless in the front garden. She immediately went to him, where she discovered he had been bitten by their dogs – two staffie / pitbull crossings, and one unknown breed.

According to the Provincial Commissioner’s office in the North West, the incident was reported on Saturday, 07 January 2023 at about 15:00.

Police and Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) rushed to the home, but the man was sadly certified dead at the scene. The SPCA were also called and the three dogs were removed from the premises.

An inquest docket has been opened and investigation into the matter continues, said SAPS.
