Two French soldiers were killed in an overnight operation to rescue four hostages in the Sahel region of Africa, the French Élysée Palace said on Friday.
According to a Reuters report, the hostages are now all safe. They include a US woman, a South Korean citizen and two Frenchmen.
The French tourists had been kidnapped last week in the Pendjari National Park, Benin. Authorities had feared the worst when their local safari guide was found dead, and the vehicle they were travelling in was found incinerated.
President Macron congratulated the French forces and their associates for the successful release of the hostages, and sent his condolences to the families of the two soldiers who lost their lives while saving others.
The two special forces soldiers were named as petty officers Cédric de Pierrepont and Alain Bertoncello.
