A plane crash in Wonderboom, South Africa has tragically left one person dead and approximately 19 injured, according to emergency medical service ER24.
The charter plane crashed about 5km east of the Wonderboom airport, just north of Pretoria. It reportedly hit a small factory and seriously injured two people on the ground.
ER24 paramedics, along with several other services, were on the scene just north of Pretoria on Tuesday afternoon, to treat and triage patients, before transporting them to a nearby hospital.
Injuries ranged from minor to critical, ER24 reported in a statement on their website.
The fatality was reportedly in the cockpit but it has not yet been confirmed if it was the pilot or engineer.
“The details surrounding this incident are not yet known to our paramedics,” said ER24.
However one eye witness said the air crash had been “absolutely frightening” with smoke and flames visible on take off… when it is alleged that an engine burst into flames.
Footage of the chartered aircraft, taking off from Wonderboom airport seconds before it crashed, has surfaced… showing smoke suddenly billowing from behind one of the engines. People speaking in Afrikaans can be heard talking about the flames. (Watch below.)
The SA Civil Aviation Authority says it has sent its officers to the scene of the crash site to investigate.
The vintage Convair-340 plane – which was built in 1954 – was due to fly out of South Africa on Thursday – on it way, via East Africa – to the Aviodrome Air Museum in the Netherlands, where it was to become an exhibit at the Dutch theme park.
On Tuesday evening, the theme park said it was “hugely shocked” by the crash. The plane had been expected at the Aviodrome on 23 July. The theme park said it had “crashed in South Africa during takeoff on a test flight”.
ER24 thanked all the emergency services who were on scene at the Wonderboom crash “for their hard work and dedication”.
