The Democratic Alliance (DA) is today – Friday 27 October 2017 – holding a silent protest at Gauteng Premier David Makhura’s office in solidarity with all victims of sexual abuse and violence in Gauteng’s schools.
The DA said: “We stand in solidarity with all victims of sexual abuse and violence in Gauteng’s schools as we fight to ensure that every child’s learning environment is free from intimidation, abuse and any other form of violence.”
Corporal punishment has been outlawed for over 20 years in South African schools, but – as evidenced by shocking video footage filmed in school classrooms, which has gone viral in recent weeks – it seems it is still the most prominent form of discipline in the country in some schools.

Sexual abuse in schools in Gauteng has shaken the lives of many learners, their families and communities. Earlier this week an accused school patroller – who allegedly sexually abused 87 learners at AB Xuma Primary – appeared before court.
Parliament has urged the Department of Basic Education to make its procedures for hiring employees more stringent, using the national register for sex offenders, so as to ensure that children are safe from known offenders.
The DA say they “will once again call on Premier David Makhura to act decisively and show leadership by urgently appointing a commission of inquiry into sexual abuse and related matters at Gauteng’s schools.”
The problem of corporal punishment in schools is not confined to Gauteng. Footage of teachers engaged in physical abuse has also emerged in other parts of the country, including KwaZulu-Natal (see video below).
On Sunday evening Carte Blanche will be investigating the issue.
The current affairs programme says: “In recent weeks, horrific images of teachers violently caning and abusing pupils have gone viral. The Department of Basic Education has condemned this, but have they done enough to remedy the situation? Carte Blanche asks: what happens when the educator becomes the abuser?” (This episode and more can be viewed by South Africans abroad on Showmax.)
