The Rock on how his father ‘tried to kill’ his stepdad
American actor and former WWE wrestler The Rock opened up about his father’s tough childhood after his father died.
American actor Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson was interviewed on Trevor Noah’s new show, What Now? which kicked off on 9 November and opened up about his father’s tough upbringing following his father’s death.

Although he has now cemented his name in the film industry, Dwayne Johnson first made a name for himself in the WWE space. His father Wade ‘Rocky’ Johnson was also a Canadian professional wrestler and a WWE Hall of Fame wrestler. He died on 15 January 2020 at 75 years old.
Speaking to South African-born comedian-turned-presenter, Trevor Noah, The Rock shared a saddening story about how his father’s holidays suddenly changed for the worst after his biological father died.
“My dad Rocky Johnson, his dad died when he was 13. The holidays that came after his dad’s death [were different]. — A new boyfriend [Rocky’s mother’s new boyfriend] was in the picture. The boyfriend gets drunk [and] pis*es on the turkey. My dad grabbed a big shovel and drew a line in the dirt and said ‘If you cross this line, I’m going to kill you.’ The drunk a*s hole crossed the line, he [Rocky] knocked him out cold as a block of ice… My dad knocked him out with a shovel and tried to kill him,” the American star detailed.

The Rock says that when the police eventually showed up at the scene, they advised his grandmother to either get rid of her new boyfriend or take her son [Rocky] somewhere else. This, he explains was because she was told that when her boyfriend woke up from being knocked unconscious, Rocky or her lover will probably end up finishing off what they started. The Rock says his grandmother ultimately chose her boyfriend over his dad and that’s how his father ended up on the streets at 13 years old.

RIP: MORE ABOUT THE ACTOR’S LATE FATHER
When The Rock’s father died in 2020, another former professional wrestler and family friend, Brian Blair, shed some light on Rocky’s last few days, the Florida Times-Union reported.
“He [Rocky] was just under the weather, he thought he had the flu or something. [So] I said, ‘You, need to get checked out, Rocky.’ He said he’d be OK. Then he missed this Sunday [church service]. When I talked to him again, he said he still wasn’t feeling good and he still missed church. He still didn’t get checked out,” Blair was quoted as saying.
