Dr Claude Mashego made history by being crowned as the first-ever Miss World SA on the 28th of October 2023. We’ve taken some time to get to know her and found seven interesting facts about the 24-year-old.

It’s been a whirlwind first 10 days for Dr Claude Mashego who became the first woman to ever walk away with the Miss World South Africa title. The newly founded pageant will see the winner travel to compete in the global Miss World pageant every year and for Mashego, it’s a massive dream come true. Before she sets her attentions to the global pageant, South Africans have been eager to get to know her a little better. - SHE’S A SECOND-YEAR MEDICAL INTERN
Dr Claude Mashego is in the early stages of her career at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Johannesburg. She is in the second year of her internship and is a qualified Doctor of Medicine, having graduated from the University of Pretoria in December 2021.
- BUSHBUCKRIDGE, BORN AND BRED
The residents of Bushbuckridge in Mpumalanga were elated with joy after seeing one of their own take the Miss World SA crown at the end of October. Mashego was born in the town and grew up in the neighbourhood of Acornhoek. She went to Orhovelani School in the same neighbourhood.

- CROWNED MISS MPUMALANGA 2021
Winning Miss World SA might have been a massive achievement for the young doctor, but it’s not her first experience in the world of pageantry. In 2021, Mashego was crowned as Miss Mpumalanga, edging out stiff competition from other leading ladies in her province.

- IN 2020 SHE STARTED CUTTING HER HAIR AND NEVER LOOKED BACK
During 2020, Mashego made a bald decision. To shave her natural hair and opt for a shorter cut. That changed the trajectory of her style and image because fast forward three years, she’s now renowned for her various short-trimmed hairstyles. When she wants to, she’s able to switch things up and rock longer pieces, but the 2020 change kicked off a new era of loving and being comfortable in short hair.
- SHE RUNS HER OWN YOUTH LEADERSHIP NETWORK
Our Miss World SA is extremely passionate about developing young leaders. She runs her own organisation called the Youth Leadership Network and has expressed her commitment to developing leadership skills in local communities through her platform. She said ahead of winning Miss World SA, “There will be communities I can never reach for geographical reasons and because I am just one person.
