The head of the British Monarchy has more than one headache at a time when things are supposed to be winding down for the family. The paper reports that King Charles may have been profiting from dead British citizens and the news has sent British social media users into a frenzy.

KING CHARLES AND THE CASE OF THE UNCLAIMED

According to the paper, King Charles is said to be making money off the deaths of several thousand UK nationals. The king is said to have collected “tens of millions of pounds” thanks to a controversial law known as the Duchy of Lancaster Act.

In simple terms: this act allows the monarchy to repossess land or property that was not declared in an official will. Unfortunately, like in many countries, a lot of people in England pass away without declaring what should happen to their assets in a will. As a result, Charles has been a benefactor of numerous properties that went unclaimed and it is said that the funds gained from exchanging these properties goes directly to the crown.

WHAT DO THEY DO WITH THE PROPERTIES?

The properties are repossessed before being auctioned and the money is then split between the Royal Family and numerous charities across the country. Despite this, many UK nationals were livid when they found out how much the King is profiting from the dead.

One user wrote on social media, “I thought I knew royal greed – but King Charles profiting from the assets of the dead is a disgusting new low”. In contrast, many others saw through the attempted 100 million pound donation that the Royal Family promised.

It remains unclear if this law, which has been in place since medieval times, will be reviewed any time soon.
