Angie Oeh: Rapper remembered on her birthday

Afrikaans rapper Angie Oeh passed away in August this year, but leaves behind a legacy of music for the rap and hip-hop scene.

Afrikaans rapper Angie Oeh passed away in August this year, but leaves behind a legacy of music for the rap and hip-hop scene from South Africa.

After her untimely death after a battle with lung cancer, Angie Oeh has been remembered by her loved ones in a Facebook post on what would have been her twenty-fifth birthday.

Her music classifies as ‘mumble rap’, and joins a legacy of Afrikaans rappers like Jack Parow and Isaac Mutant.

ANGIE OEH’S BIRTHDAY POST

A post on the Facebook page for Angie Oeh commemorates the artist on what would have been her twenty-fifth birthday.

The post reads, in Afrikaans: ‘Our Angie would have been 25 today. Thank you to everyone who loves her and still supports her. You know who you are.’

A photo of the singer appears with the post, which shows off her extensive collection of tattoos.

Angie Oeh was born Angelique Greeff in 1996.

From her first single, she became integral to making the Afrikaans ‘mumble rap’ scene famous. Anyone who has ever moved through Pretoria, will recognize the back scenes of her music videos.

Fellow rapper Jack Parow featured Oeh in the music video for ‘Meisies & Partytjies’ or ‘Girls & Parties’. Her music was an instant hit, spreading the idea of ‘mumble rap’ to parties all over the globe.

‘Mumble rap’ is defined as rap that can be deliberately hard to understand, gaining fame in the 2010s through music-sharing sites.

Cardi-B and Future are some of the most famous international artists who have been called part of the mumble rap phenomenon

She recorded music up until a few days before her passing, including songs like Mooiste Meisies (‘Prettiest Girls’).
