However, for the purposes of this investigation into South Africa’s best Driving Licence Test Centres, we’re going to focus on driving licence renewals. As that is, after all, the most common transaction at any DLTC.
SOUTH AFRICA’S BEST DRIVING LICENCE TEST CENTRES
At this point we should also stress that you no longer need to visit a DLTC to renew your car licence disc. A driver’s licence, yes, but there are a multitiude of ways to renew a vehicle licence online. There are several services you can access on WhatsApp, too. Nevertheless, as driver’s licences still have to be renewed face-to-face, here’s a list of South Africa’s best Driving Licence Test Centres (DLTCs) for the purpose. Inspired by a story on MyBroadBand, in Gauteng we investigated the amount of available booking slots at various RTMC DLTC locations. The rationale being, if there’s a slot available, you’ll be served and be on your way quicker.
ONGOING CARD MACHINE PROBLEMS
This is not to suggest that there won’t be delays in the process, as the Department of Transport (DOT) has battled with its ageing card printer for some time now. Back in 2022, the number of expired licences stood at approximately 2.8 million due to an extended grace period for motorists who were unable to renew. This has thankfully come down in recent months.

If you go to the online.natis.gov.za (eNatis) portal, select driver’s licence card renewal option and follow the prompts, you will see a list of available slots. Note that ONLY DLTCs in Gauteng and the Eastern Cape are on this system.

As you can see, we’ve only listed the top 20 on the portal, and by far the best equipped to handle driver’s licence renewals are Eco Park, Waterfall Park, Centurion Gautrain Station and Midrand Gautrain Station with slots in their thousands available.
WHATS ABOUT WESTERN CAPE AND OTHER PROVINCES?
When it comes to finding South Africa’s best Driving Licence Test Centres (DLTCs), it’s worth noting that the Western Cape and several other provinces are not loaded on the eNatis portal. For a similar service online you must visit eServices. From there you can find a participating DLTC in the Western Cape. There is no online appointment booking, unfortunately, but you can email: traffic.services@capetown.gov.za for more information.
