If you’re born in a foreign country but eligible for a South African ID online, a government-issued foreign identification card or passport can be used as valid identification.
HOW TO APPLY ONLINE
South African ID applications in 2024 can be done as follows:
- Visit the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) eHome website.
- Click on Apply Online for Your Smart ID or Passport.
- Select Go to Registration.
- Fill in your personal details.
- Including: Name, ID number, passport number or birth certificate number, date of birth, email address, and cell phone number.
- Press Next.

- Make the EFT payment online.
- If you don’t have digital banking, you can visit your bank in-person to make a deposit payment.
