SASSA: Latest info on grant payments March 2024

SASSA grant payments March 2024 kick off tomorrow (Tuesday 5 March) with Old-Age Pension Grants. Next on the South African Social Security Agency list will be Disability Grants on Wednesday 6 March. Concluded by Children’s Grants on Thursday 7 March.

From April 2024 onwards (refer to our list of all SASSA payment dates for the next year below), much-needed increases come into effect across the board. These are structured as follows:

SASSA GRANT PAYMENTS MARCH 2024

However, let’s not get ahead of ourselves. South Africa’s neediest citizens still need to receive SASSA grant payments March 2024. For admission to the Old-Age Grant system you will need the following, says the SASSA website:

• You must be resident in South Africa.
• No less than 60-years old.
• You cannot be a recipient of another social grant.
• You and your spouse must comply with the means and asset test.
• You must have a valid 13-digit bar-coded ID and not be cared for in a state Institution.

Furthermore, to qualify for a Child Support Grant, the following applies according to the SASSA website:

• You and the child/children must reside in South Africa.
• You must be the primary caregiver of the child/children.
• The child/children must be born after 31 December 1993.
• You and your spouse must meet the requirements of the means test (no asset test applies).
• You cannot care for more than six non-biological children.
• The child cannot be cared for in a state institution.

OVERVIEW OF GRANT RECIPIENTS IN SOUTH AFRICA

Currently in South Africa – a system that received a C grade in global ranking of pensions – there are 4-million Older Persons recipients. 13 million receive Child Support Grants and there are 1-million Disability Grants disbursed monthly.

African National Congress President Cyril Ramaphosa has praised his party’s ‘pro-poor policies’. However, The South African has since found that SASSA pensions are eight-times less than some European nations’ and have stayed flat since the start of democracy in 1994. This contrasts poorly with government wages that have more than quadrupled in the last decade alone.
