Ramaphosa: Land Expropriation MUST Follow The Law. No Land Grabs!

President Cyril Ramaphosa has reiterated that land expropriation without compensation must be done within the confines of the law, so that “everybody’s rights are protected and advanced”.

The President was speaking in his capacity as head of the African National Congress (ANC) during a voter registration drive at the New Creation Covenant Church in Olievenhoutbosch, Pretoria, on Sunday.

Meanwhile the EFF opposition party had allegedly encouraged poor workers to stake out plots on privately owned, walled-off properties in the area.

The Gauteng Department of Human Settlements condemned the land invasion at Olievenhoutbosch, calling on law enforcement agencies to take the necessary action against “criminal elements within the community” who break the law.

In December, government subsidy houses were invaded in Olievenhoutbosch.

Gasela said that the department has obtained an interdict against further invasion of houses in the area, and was also in the process of evicting 71 people who invaded houses.

Olievenhoutbosch residents picketed outside the church – calling for service delivery and adequate housing in the area – ahead of President Ramaphosa’s address at the church.

Speaking to the crowd, Ramaphosa said this is a “new era” with a new approach where problems are dealt with quickly and efficiently. He said there are no problems without solutions, and assured residents that Premier David Makhura would meet with them on Thursday to hear their concerns and look for solutions.

Of land expropriation without compensation, he said: “When we talk about the return of the land to our people, we have got to do everything in an orderly way, in terms of our laws, in terms of our Constitution, so that everybody’s rights are protected and advanced.” He said this had to be done in a “measured manner”.

“The land issue has to advance the interests of our people. So that our people can return to the land and work the land and grow our economy but as we do that we have to do it in terms of the rules and the laws we have; in terms of the agreements and laws we have in our country.

“A new dawn must mean we do things in a proper way, without any fraud, corruption or violating the law,” said President Ramphosa. – SAnews.gov.za
